Ralf Dahrendorf was a German-British sociologist known for his work on class and social conflict. He served as director of the LSE from 1974 to 1984 and was active in both German and British public life, later sitting in the House of Lords. For the school's centenary he wrote a full history, 'LSE: A History of the London School of Economics and Political Science 1895-1995'. In it he read the record as showing that the Webbs' plan to train an influential class grounded in social science had largely come true.
