Kwame Nkrumah was born in Nkroful, a village in the western Gold Coast, into a modest family. He trained as a teacher at Achimota College in Accra and taught at Catholic schools before deciding to study abroad. His early years under British colonial rule shaped his later drive for African self-rule.
In 1935 Nkrumah sailed to the United States and enrolled at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, a historically Black college. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and sociology in 1939 and later a bachelor of theology. He supported himself with menial jobs and read widely in Pan-African and socialist thought.
Nkrumah continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a master's in education in 1942 and a master's in philosophy the following year. He helped organize African students in the United States and moved in Pan-African and anti-colonial circles. His decade in America deepened his political ideas.
In 1945 Nkrumah moved to London, where he studied briefly and threw himself into anti-colonial organizing. He worked closely with the Trinidadian Pan-Africanist George Padmore, who became a mentor and ally. Together they built networks linking students, workers, and activists across the African diaspora.
Nkrumah served as a joint secretary, alongside George Padmore, of the Fifth Pan-African Congress held in Manchester in October 1945. The gathering brought together future leaders such as Jomo Kenyatta and called openly for an end to colonial rule. It marked a shift from petitioning empire to demanding independence and mass action.
Nkrumah returned to the Gold Coast in late 1947 to become general secretary of the United Gold Coast Convention, a party of professionals and merchants seeking self-rule. He built a mass following and pushed for faster change than the party's cautious leaders wanted. The tension set the stage for his own break.
After police fired on protesting ex-servicemen in Accra in February 1948, riots spread through the colony. The British arrested Nkrumah and five other Convention leaders, later known as the Big Six, and detained them. The unrest pushed Britain to begin cautious constitutional reform.
On 12 June 1949 Nkrumah broke from the United Gold Coast Convention and founded the Convention People's Party. The new party demanded self-government now and drew mass support from workers, market women, and young people. It became the main vehicle of the independence movement.
In January 1950 Nkrumah launched Positive Action, a campaign of strikes, boycotts, and nonviolent protest modeled partly on Gandhi's methods. The colonial government declared a state of emergency, arrested him, and jailed him for sedition. He kept directing the Convention People's Party from prison.
The Convention People's Party won a sweeping victory in the Gold Coast's first general election under a new constitution in February 1951. Britain released Nkrumah from prison, and he became Leader of Government Business and then prime minister in 1952. It began a period of shared power with the colonial administration on the road to full independence.

Led by Kwame Nkrumah and the Convention People's Party, the Gold Coast became independent Ghana, the first sub-Saharan African colony to break from European rule. Nkrumah tied Ghana's freedom to the wider liberation of the whole continent. The event became a model and a rallying point for independence movements across Africa.
In 1958 Nkrumah's government passed the Preventive Detention Act, which let it jail people without trial for up to five years. Over time it was used against political rivals, trade unionists, and critics. It marked an early and lasting turn toward authoritarian rule.
In December 1958 Nkrumah hosted the first All-African Peoples' Conference in Accra, drawing nationalists and independence leaders from across the continent. Delegates included figures such as Patrice Lumumba of the Congo. The meeting made Accra a hub of Pan-African organizing and advanced Nkrumah's vision of a united Africa.
On 1 July 1960 Ghana became a republic and Nkrumah became its first president after a referendum. The new constitution gave him wide executive powers. He used the office to push both national development and a continental Pan-African agenda.
On 25 May 1963 Nkrumah joined other African leaders in Addis Ababa to found the Organisation of African Unity. He pressed hard for a tightly united United States of Africa with a common government, but most leaders favored a looser union of sovereign states. The body that emerged was closer to their vision than his.
In January 1964 a referendum, held amid intimidation and a reported margin that observers found implausible, made Ghana a one-party state under the Convention People's Party and Nkrumah president for life. It ended legal opposition and concentrated power in his hands. A personality cult grew around him, hailed as Osagyefo, meaning redeemer.
In 1965 Nkrumah published Neo-Colonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism, arguing that former colonies stayed under foreign economic control despite formal independence. The book angered Washington and reportedly cost Ghana United States aid. It became an influential text in Pan-African and anti-imperialist thought.
The Akosombo Dam on the Volta River was completed in 1965 and formally opened in early 1966, creating one of the world's largest reservoirs. It was Nkrumah's flagship project, meant to power industry and an aluminum smelter and to prove African self-development. The scheme drove growth but also debt, and displaced tens of thousands of people.
On 24 February 1966 army and police officers seized power in Ghana while Nkrumah was abroad on a visit to Beijing, en route to Hanoi. The plotters formed the National Liberation Council, banned the Convention People's Party, and freed detainees. Declassified United States records show that Washington knew of the plot in advance and welcomed his fall, and the CIA's Accra station kept close contact with the plotters, though scholars still debate how far it directly organized the coup. Years of one-party rule, economic strain, and falling cocoa prices had drained his support at home.
After the coup Nkrumah found refuge in Guinea, where President Ahmed Sekou Toure named him honorary co-president of the country. From exile he kept writing on Pan-Africanism and revolution and hoped to return to power. He never did.
Kwame Nkrumah died of cancer on 27 April 1972 in Bucharest, where he was receiving medical treatment. He was 62 and had spent his final years in exile in Guinea. His body was later returned to West Africa.
Nkrumah's remains were brought back to Ghana and buried at his birthplace, Nkroful, and in 1992 a national mausoleum and memorial park opened in his honor in Accra. Later governments rehabilitated his image as the founder of the nation. He is remembered both as a liberation hero and Pan-African leader and for the one-party state and detentions without trial of his later rule.
