Selig Harrison, the Washington Post’s South Asia specialist, wrote an article ti 1972 entitled “The Shah, Not the Kremlin, Touched off Afghan Coup”, concluding: The Communist takeover in Kabul [April 1978] came about when it did, and in the way that it did, because the Shah disturbed the tenuous equilibrium that had existed in Afghanistan between the Soviet Union and the West for nearly three decades.
