  On July 11, in a dramatic protest, twenty thousand mutilés—maimed war veterans—the legless in wheelchairs, the blind led by nurses, marched in silent protest up the Champs-Élysées to the Place d’Iéna overlooking the U.S. embassy, where they laid a wreath at the foot of the equestrian statue of George Washington.
