George Washington was a Virginia planter and militia officer who was chosen to command the Continental Army in 1775 and led it through the Revolutionary War against Britain. He presided over the 1787 Constitutional Convention and, in 1789, became the first president under the new Constitution, setting many of the precedents of the office, including the two-term limit he chose to observe. He was also a large slaveholder who held hundreds of enslaved people at Mount Vernon and freed them only in his will. He stepped down after two terms and died in 1799.
