  Roosevelt decided not to run for reelection in 1908, but he backed William Howard Taft, a man later described by Senator Nelson Aldrich’s great-grandson as a “well-fed patrician.”1 Like the Aldrich family, the Tafts had come to America from England in the late 1600s and settled in a small town in Massachusetts named after the English town of Uxbridge.
