The Haitian revolution of 1791-1 804 and the emancipations in the British Caribbean of the 1 83 0s sent mixed messages to slaves, planters, and abolitionists-undermining the normality of slavery and making clear to slave owners what they had to fear (chapters 8 and rn) .Within the United States, the formula that had seemed to assure peaceful expansion of the union-the possibility of making states from settled territories-opened up the sore of slavery to political contention at the federal level.
