In 1848 , when another spasm of political uprisings broke out across the continent, Nicholas volunteered his services as the "gen darme of Europe." His interventions assisted the Austrians in the Balkans I and in Hungary, where two hundred thousand Russian troops intervened to shore up Habsburg control.
