After centuries of competition, intrigue, and all-out warfare against neighboring rivals, the Qin king made himself emperor in 221 BCE. Qin control suc cumbed to internal conflict and external assault only fifteen years later, but imperial power was restored by Liu Bang, the founder of the Han dynasty.
