Around 500 BCE, the Romans replaced their king with a republic-a political innovation of enormous consequence. Most of the enormous ter ritory that we know as the Roman empire was acquired from the second century B CE to the first century CE. During most of this time, Rome was Chapter 2 ruled by elected representatives of its people, reminding us that there is no incompatibility between empire and republican government.
