  In their first war with Carthage (264 to 241 BCE) , the Romans lost many naval battles but ultimately won and occupied Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica. It took until 202 BCE for Rome to defeat Carthage decisively and take over its colonies in Africa and Spain.
