The sweep of Islamic empire across the southern Mediterranean was interrupted by a Berber rebellion in 741 , which was put down with difficulty, and then by conflict within the caliph ate itself. The Umayyads stayed on in Spain, despite losing the earlier core of the empire in Syria around 750.
