Only after 714 did the king's leading general and minister, Charles Martel, put together a more unified and effective military machine and expand Frankish control over more territories and peoples. Just as the first Arab Muslim polities developed on the edge of the great empires, the Franks benefited from being relatively far away from Christian Byzantium as they consolidated power.
