Migrations of pastoralists into Anatolia intensified after one group ofTurkic-speakers, the Seljuks, captured Baghdad in 1055 and other groups moved on. Ambitious tribal leaders had plenty of opportunity to make, unmake, and switch alliances, to serve promising overlords, and to try to displace them in a political landscape repeatedly resculpted by crusaders, Byzantine emperors, provincial rulers, Venetian merchants and naval forces, Arab caliphs, and Mongol khans, as well as rebels against and subordinates of all of the above.
