In 1598 Philip II died, leaving in place a vast transoceanic empire. More than the trading, enclave empires of Portugal and later the Netherlands (chapter 6) , it integrated extra-European territories and non-European peo ples under a monarchy based in Europe and intent on maintaining its cen tral position.
