The campaign to conquer southern China under the Song dynasty presented the greatest challenge, but after extensive preparation aided by Chinese ad visors, Chinggis's grandson Khubilai Khan finally defeated the Song in 1279 and founded the next dynasty, the Yuan. After repeated attempts to conquer Japan failed, the Mongols reached their limits at the Pacific.
