The yam system set up by Great Khan Ogodei in 1234 was a series of way stations, situated every twenty-five or thirty miles, the distance that horses with their loads could conveniently travel in a day. These posts were provisioned with horses and supplies for authorized users-diplomatic envoys, couri ers carrying imperial orders, and merchants.
