    Beginning in 1595 the Spanish government gave Portuguese merchants the asiento, the contract to supply its New World colonies with slaves. With the growth of slave trading from the well-fortified Portuguese bases in Angola in the seventeenth century, the linkage between increasingly militaristic kingdoms in Africa and the plantation complex of the Americas was strengthened-at a tremendous cost in violence throughout a large part of west and central Africa.
