The Muslims of Granada were initially allowed to keep their faith, but after 1502 they were ordered to convert or leave the region. Occasional rebellions and endemic warfare with the Ottomans put the loyalty of Muslim converts in question; they were deported, first from Granada and finally, in 1609, from all the kingdoms of Spain.
