The state exempted Indians from the Inquisition after 1571 but encouraged other institutions aimed at enforcing as well as propagating the faith among indigenous peoples: the Provisor of Natives, Tribunal of the Faith of Indians, Natives' Courts. Afri can rituals among slaves were also the targets of repressive efforts by church and state.
