Charles and his brother Ferdinand, the Habsburg king ofAustria, and Sulei man fought bitterly over Hungary, and in 1547 Ferdinand had to give up his claim to become king of Hungary and pay tribute to the Ottomans for his right to rule some Hungarian territories. Based on this treaty, which referred to Charles as the "King of Spain"-not emperor-Suleiman could claim that he was the "Caesar of the Romans." But Suleiman had his eastern edge problems, too, namely the Safavids with their claims to Islamic supremacy.
