In 1600 the EIC was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I, giving it a monopoly on English trade east of the Cape of Good Hope. Its initial 125 shareholders set out to compete with the Dutch VOC, and while they could not match their power and networks in southeast Asia, they did well in India.
