The notion of"British" meant little before the Union with Scotland in 1707 and the word "empire" in the sixteenth and seven teenth centuries referred to England being " entire of itself," independent of any superior authority. But empire-building, once others were doing it, was a game that had to be played and had to be won-at the risk of losing control over supply routes.
