Theodore Roosevelt was a New York patrician who built a public image as a soldier, reformer, and outdoorsman before becoming president in 1901 after McKinley's assassination. He pursued antitrust action against large combinations, backed consumer-protection laws, and set aside vast tracts of land for conservation. Abroad he pushed an aggressive policy in the Western Hemisphere, adding the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine and backing the separation of Panama to build the canal, actions later criticised as heavy-handed intervention. He broke with his party in 1912 to run a third-party campaign and lost.
