Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the presidency in 1932 amid the Great Depression and reshaped American government through the New Deal, creating Social Security, deposit insurance, securities regulation, and a wave of new agencies. He took the dollar off the domestic gold standard and pressed a large program of relief and recovery. He led the country into the Second World War after Pearl Harbor, authorised the Manhattan Project, and helped design the postwar order at Bretton Woods. His record also includes the wartime internment of Japanese Americans. He died in office in April 1945, early in his fourth term.
