Christine Lagarde trained as a lawyer and served as France's finance minister before becoming managing director of the International Monetary Fund in 2011, the first woman to hold the post. She led the Fund through the aftermath of the global financial crisis and the European debt crisis, and oversaw the 2015 decision to add China's yuan to the Fund's reserve-currency basket. In 2019 she moved to head the European Central Bank. A French court found her negligent in a state arbitration case from her time as minister but imposed no penalty.
