Dominique Strauss-Kahn was a French economist and Socialist politician who became managing director of the International Monetary Fund in 2007. He led the Fund's response to the 2008 global financial crisis, arguing for coordinated stimulus and a larger IMF role in supporting stricken economies, and was widely seen as a likely French presidential candidate. In May 2011 he was arrested in New York on sexual assault charges and resigned from the IMF; the New York criminal case was later dropped, and a separate French case ended in acquittal, while the accusations ended his political career.
