William Ewart Gladstone led the Liberal Party and served four times as prime minister across the late nineteenth century. Though he spoke against jingoism, his government occupied Egypt in 1882, a hold that lasted decades. He was widely blamed for delaying the relief expedition that arrived too late to save General Gordon at Khartoum in 1885. He spent his final years pushing unsuccessfully for Irish Home Rule, splitting his own party over it.
