Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, the longest reign of any British monarch until Elizabeth II. After the 1857 rebellion the Crown took direct control of India from the East India Company, and in 1876 Parliament proclaimed Victoria Empress of India at Disraeli's urging. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees became vast displays of imperial power, and by her death the empire covered roughly a quarter of the globe. She was a distant, symbolic head of an empire whose expansion and wars she followed closely but did not direct.
