Amid anti-German feeling in World War I, he issued a royal proclamation on 17 July 1917 renaming the royal house from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the House of Windsor. He also required relatives to drop German titles, and his cousins included Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II.
