Edward VII came to the throne in 1901 after a long wait as Prince of Wales. His short reign covered the end of the Second Boer War, the Anglo-Japanese and Anglo-French understandings, and a period of imperial pageantry including the 1903 Delhi Durbar. He was a popular figure known more for diplomacy and social life than for governing, as real power lay with ministers and Parliament. He died in 1910, four years before the war that would strain the empire he inherited.
