Herbert Kitchener rose to fame by reconquering Sudan for Britain, crushing the Mahdist army at Omdurman in 1898 and avenging Gordon's death at Khartoum. As commander in the Second Boer War he pursued a scorched-earth policy and oversaw the concentration camps where thousands of Boer and African civilians died of disease and hunger. He confronted the French at Fashoda and later served as Secretary of State for War at the start of the First World War, becoming the face of the recruitment drive. He drowned in 1916 when his ship struck a mine.
