1955 – ? British computer scientist, inventor of the World Wide Web

British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web and gave it away for free.

Tim Berners-Lee was a software engineer at CERN when, in 1989, he proposed a system to link documents across the internet using hypertext. He wrote the first web browser, server, and the HTTP and HTML standards, and in 1993 CERN released the technology into the public domain with no patent or fee. That decision let the Web spread freely and become the main medium of the information age. He went on to found the World Wide Web Consortium to keep the Web open, and later campaigned for data privacy and against the concentration of power among a few large platforms.
