Vint Cerf, with Robert Kahn, designed the TCP/IP protocols in the 1970s, the rules that let separate networks join into one internet. The work grew out of the ARPANET, the packet-switched network funded by the US defense research agency. Cerf helped guide the internet's growth through the standards process and served as a public champion of an open network. He later became a vice president at Google and an advocate for internet access and preservation.
