Rudolf Steiner developed a spiritual philosophy he called Anthroposophy and applied it to education. In 1919 he opened the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart for the children of factory workers. Waldorf education emphasizes imagination, the arts, and teaching matched to developmental stages, and it has grown into a worldwide network of schools.
