Antonescu ruled Romania as a military dictator and joined the Axis invasion of the Soviet Union. His regime carried out the murder of well over a quarter-million Jews and thousands of Roma in Romanian-controlled territory. Overthrown in 1944, he was tried and executed in 1946.
