Leon Trotsky

1879 – 1940 Russian (Soviet) revolutionary, founder of the Red Army

Organizer of the October Revolution and the Red Army, later exiled and murdered on Stalin's orders.

Leon Trotsky was a central figure of the October Revolution, organizing the armed seizure of power in Petrograd, and he built and led the Red Army to victory in the civil war. After Lenin's death he lost the succession struggle to Stalin, who cast him as the arch-enemy of the party. Expelled and exiled in 1929, Trotsky kept up a bitter critique of Stalinism from abroad and founded the Fourth International. In 1940 a Soviet agent killed him with an ice axe at his home in Mexico.
