Alexei was the only son of Nicholas and Alexandra and heir to the throne, but he suffered from hemophilia. His frequent crises drew his parents to Rasputin, who seemed able to calm the boy. He was thirteen when he was shot with his family in the cellar at Yekaterinburg in 1918.
