Pyotr Stolypin

1862 – 1911 Russian Prime Minister of Russia

The tough reformer who tried to save the tsarist order and was assassinated.

Imperial government; led harsh repression after 1905 and major agrarian reforms; assassinated in 1911.

Stolypin became prime minister after the 1905 revolution and combined severe repression with land reforms meant to build a class of independent peasants. His military courts hanged so many that the noose was nicknamed 'Stolypin's necktie.' He was shot dead at the Kiev opera in 1911.
