House of Romanov by marriage; wife of Alexander III and mother of Nicholas II; escaped Russia in 1919.

Dagmar of Denmark married the future Alexander III and became a popular empress. As the mother of Nicholas II she remained a figure at court and often clashed with her daughter-in-law Alexandra. She fled Russia after the revolution and died in Denmark, never accepting that her sons had been killed.
