Mayer Amschel Rothschild built a banking business in the Frankfurt Jewish quarter, starting as a coin dealer and moving into finance for the local ruler. He sent his five sons to establish branches in Frankfurt, Vienna, London, Naples and Paris, creating a cross-border family bank. That structure made the Rothschilds a leading force in 19th-century European finance and, in turn, a fixture of later antisemitic conspiracy theories that greatly exaggerate their reach.
