Nathan Rothschild moved from Frankfurt to England and founded the London bank N M Rothschild & Sons. He organized the transfer of funds that helped pay British and allied armies during the Napoleonic Wars, becoming one of the most important financiers in Europe. A popular story that he made a fortune by trading on early news of the 1815 Waterloo victory is largely a later embellishment, much of it spread through antisemitic writing.
