Religion
Sunni Islam (Wahhabi/Salafi).
Affiliations
Founder and first king of Saudi Arabia; head of the House of Saud allied with the Wahhabi religious establishment.

Through decades of conquest he united most of the Arabian Peninsula and in 1932 proclaimed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His alliance with the Wahhabi clergy, rooted in an 18th century pact between the Al Saud and Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and the granting of oil concessions shaped the kingdom's future. Most later Saudi kings have been his sons.
