Mohammed bin Salman, a grandson of Ibn Saud, rose rapidly to become Saudi Arabia's crown prince in 2017 and the effective ruler of the kingdom. He launched Vision 2030, a plan to diversify the economy away from oil, eased some social restrictions, and expanded the Public Investment Fund into a giant global investor. His rule has also been marked by a crackdown on dissent, the detention of rivals and activists, the war in Yemen, and the 2018 killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, which a US intelligence assessment concluded he had approved, an accusation he denies.
