David Miscavige joined the Sea Org as a teenager and rose to become the most powerful figure in Scientology after L. Ron Hubbard's death in 1986. As chairman of the Religious Technology Center he consolidated control over the church's organizations. He oversaw the 1993 settlement that won Scientology tax-exempt status in the United States. Former members have accused him of physical abuse and coercive practices, which the church denies.
