Elizabeth Peabody was a Boston educator and reformer active in the Transcendentalist circle. After learning of Froebel's methods, she opened the first English speaking kindergarten in the United States in 1860 and campaigned tirelessly to spread the idea. She trained teachers and published materials that helped establish kindergartens in American public schools.
