Susan Blow studied Froebel's methods and, with school superintendent William Torrey Harris, opened the first successful public kindergarten in the United States in St. Louis in 1873. She trained kindergarten teachers and became a leading voice for Froebel's approach. Her work helped make the kindergarten a standard part of American public schooling.
