Salvador Allende was a physician and socialist politician who in 1970 became the first Marxist elected president of Chile in a free vote, leading the Popular Unity coalition. His government nationalised copper and pursued redistribution amid deep polarisation, economic crisis, and documented covert efforts by the United States to undermine him. On 11 September 1973 the military under Augusto Pinochet seized power; Allende died in the presidential palace, an act generally established as suicide as troops closed in. His overthrow ushered in a long and brutal dictatorship.
