Augusto Pinochet led the September 1973 military coup that overthrew Salvador Allende and headed the junta that ruled Chile for nearly seventeen years. His regime carried out systematic repression, and official truth commissions later documented thousands of people killed or disappeared and tens of thousands tortured. His government also imposed free-market economic reforms associated with the Chicago School. He lost a 1988 plebiscite and stepped down in 1990; he was arrested in London in 1998 on human rights charges but died in 2006 before facing a full trial.
