John Quincy Adams

1767 – 1848 American 6th President of the United States

Sixth U.S. president and later antislavery congressman.

Democratic-Republican, later National Republican and Whig; not a Freemason and later aligned with the Anti-Masonic movement.

As Secretary of State he negotiated the Adams-Onis Treaty and helped craft the Monroe Doctrine. His single presidential term promoted internal improvements and the American System. After the presidency he served in the House and fought the gag rule on antislavery petitions.
